Another Hike Planned
April 22nd, 2008
Next week I’ll post a trip report on backpacking in the Sycamore Wilderness Canyon. It’s the second largest Canyon in Arizona next to the Grand Canyon. Sycamore Canyon is very remote, hot, and dry. Water is only found two months out of the year on the North end. April is one of those months. As the Grand Canyon may get 4 million visitors a year, the Sycamore Canyon is lucky if it gets 400. That’s because you can’t get there by car, you need an off road vehicle or your walking 10 miles to get to the nearest trailhead. Trails are not marked, and there are no bear cables. You are on your own.
Besides having a reputation of being wild and remote, the wilderness has accumulated some interesting lore, which included hikers being transported into a spacecraft after they aimed their flashlights at strange stellar lights. Stories say this is where transdimensional beings appear, where UFOs abscond with unsuspecting hikers, where Bigfoot lurks.
When I get back I’ll share some of my photo’s with everyone. I’ll have a video blog and trail info on my backpacking site
