The 40 Mile Hike (Day 1)
February 27th, 2008
When I got up to the Mountains of Northern Georgia Sunday, it was rainny, foggy, and cold. I got up to the Mountain Crossings Outfitters, and Bunkhouse around 4:00 PM. It was pouring outside, and was soaking wet by the time I got all my gear out of my car. The guys at the outfitter were really cool, and helped check my backpack and gear. I checked into the bunkhouse and settled in for the night. No TV, just a VCR with lots of tapes. There is a older guy that actually lives in the bunkhouse called “Pirate”. He maintains, cleans, and helps hikers settle in. He is on a volunteer basis, they don’t pay him. They have a small kitchenette area where you can make coffee, or have a bagel in the morning.

Monday Morning the sky’s had cleared, but it was cold, and windy. Temps were at 38 when I left at 8:00 AM. I weighed my pack, and it came in at 32 pounds, perfect weight for me. I didn’t however weigh my fat ass thank you very much. I had made arrangements earlier to have me shuttled to the start of the AT, and leave my car parked. I actually parked my car at the same place where that girl was killed on January 1st. (a little scary).

I got to the trailhead at 9:30 AM and was ready to go. It is 8.8 miles straight up to Springer Mountain, (the start of the AT) The whole day was cloudy and cold. Got to the top around 1:00 PM, and met a bunch of other crazy people. We all decided to hike another 2.5 miles to Stover Creek Camp. It was all pretty much down hill. I got to Stover Creek around 3:00 PM. I pitched my tent, ate, and organized my pack. I was in bed by 6:30 PM.
