The 40 Day Hike (Day 3)
February 27th, 2008
Not as cold last night, and I actually got some sleep. My toes are in bad shape. Have to duct tape my blister. Thank god for duct tape. Some of us talked last night, and the guys I have been hiking with want to do 16 miles today and get back to the Mountain Crossings Bunk House. I don’t know if I can do that many miles? Weather report is bad for Thursday.
Was up early and started hiking by 8:00 AM. It’s cloudy today, but feels like it’s going to be much warmer. I am hoping my feet hold out. If I do the 16 miles, I have to hike up Blood Mountain which is 4,700 feet. Going to be a tough climb up and down. Hikers say its tougher going down than up.
One of the other hikers gave me a Snickers bar for energy. I may need it.
Long, long day of hiking. I am at the shelter I had originally planned stay at. It’s 12:30 PM. I have 5 miles left to do, but it’s all up, and then straight down. My toes are really bad, and my knee it starting to give me issues with down hills.

Got up to Blood Mountain at 2:00 PM. The sun is kind of out, and I can see really nice views. The climb wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s pretty cool being up here.

Hiking down Blood was gruesome. It was straight down and dangerous. All rock, no trail, and hand over foot climbs over boulders. Very steep.
Got to my car at 5:00 PM. I am beat. Going to stay at the Blood Mountains Cabins tonight to take a hot shower, and sleep in a comfortable bed.
It was a great hike.
