Blood Mountain Bound
February 14th, 2008
Preparing for a hike is pretty easy when it’s just the Forest Park Nature Center. Put on some shoes, jacket, and go. Preparing to hike 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail is something else. I am preparing to go down to Georgia and hike the first 40 miles of the AT. Ironically, it’s this first 40 where a large percentage of people who thought they were going to hike all the way to Maine, quit.
I have written about hiking the AT before, and I’ll try and keep everyone updated as to how the hike is going.
The first 8.8 miles of the trail is all up hill…and that’s just to get to the start of the AT. It starts on Springer Mountain in Georgia. After you hike up the 8.8, you can officially start counting your miles to Maine. There will be some steep climbs however. One of the Mountains I am going over is “Blood Mountain”. It’s over 4000 ft and its no picnic. But it’s all down hill (litterally) from there. I am only going to Neels Gap, about 30 miles away from the top of Springer. They have an outpost that is right in the middle of the trail. It’s called Mountain Crossings. You can bunk there for the night, take a shower, and eat. Like I said, this is where most people say “screw it”. Hey, it’s just a walk in the woods right?
