Luciano Misses the Point on Smoking Ban
January 15th, 2008
The new Illinois Smoking Ban has only been on the books for 15 days. Already I have read, and seen enough coverage of the ramifications of a law that has barely seen infancy to last a life time.
“Maybe police could concentrate more on keeping our roads safe. Then again, they’ll be awfully busy chasing smoke.” Luciano writes.
Last week I posted about all the drama this ban is causing. Now I think it’s just a good topic to raise either circulation, or bring up ratings. Phil Luciano in todays Journal Star writes about the enforcement problem and how we are wasting tax dollars to enforce it. He gives two really bad examples of how a call was made and the Peoria Police were somewhat smug about having to enforce a law. (Shocker)
Listen carefully: The Law will eventually be enforced by common sense. Just like the “Disorderly Conduct” Law is enforced when some drunk in a bar has had to much to drink. It’s at that time the police are called. Not the hour before when they were drinking normally. The Bar and Restaraunt owners should, and eventually will, have discresion on who is really breaking the law, and who is in a spat with his or her partner. Do the Police stand in a bar now and make everyone blow who has more than they should? NO. If you are blowing smoke in someones face in a bar, you will probably have a problem. If your boyfriend calls police because he is a jealous whinning baby and he is trying get you in trouble. Probably not. Common Sense? Yea.
The Peoria Police shouldn’t be chasing down every infraction. It’s only when the infraction disturbs the public, or causes disruption with others who are obeying the law. The City should pass a common sense ordinace to direct the Police Department on how to enforce what I call “common sense”. This wasn’t a waste of tax money Phil, although you did waste alot of time by writing it.
