High Drama in: As the Smoking Ban Turns

January 4th, 2008

If Illinois wasn’t getting prepared for this Smoking Ban deal, then it’s there own fault. Every bar and restaraunt owner knew this was coming. What’s all the drama about then? This last week, all I’ve heard was WAH WAH WAH WAH. How to enforce it? What was it going to mean? Will it drive away business? How to prosecute offenders?

Smoking ban in Peoria

This was predicted to pass quite a long time ago, and it sure wasn’t some midnight suprise. Last September, as I so brilliantly posted about, Copley News organization, presented polling data that argued most Illinois voters favor a smoking ban in all indoor public places, including bars and restaurants. The key phrase being “most illinois voters”. 54% to be exact. In January of last year, I wrote “State Wide Smoking Ban is Coming to a Bar Near You“, again a brilliant and almost psychic prediction on my part. However, it has been over a year in planning, and we are acting as if the sky is falling.

Every State that has imposed a Smoking Ban is still in the Union people. And here is a fun fact for all you bar owners. People will not give up drinking because of a lousy ciggarette. It’s the drinking that got them hooked on smoking in the first place. If you put a drink on one side of the scale and a ciggarette on the other side, guess who will win? THE DRINK. Be done with it already, it passed, it’s a law, it’s now reality. In a few years we will have adapted to the new law and bars will still be serving drinks with no consequences in part because of the smoking ban. We will survive.
