The Future of Broadcast News
November 1st, 2007
What is the difference between local broadcast news you get on T.V, and local News that appears on the Internet? It might be the way you get it, or the time of day you can recieve it. It might be the fact that Internet can be everywhere, and Broadcast News may have limited resources.
I have posted my opinion as to where Local News is going to go into the future before. Well, there is a website now in play that I believe is the future of broadcast news….Internet style. Just to recap for a second. I believe news will be streamlined to include citizens with a cell phone, or small video camera that can report the news now. Instead of a 10 reporters on staff, you will have hundreds all submitting stories on a minute to minute basis. Thus, a convergance of citizen journalism who can be at the story anywhere anytime.
The new web site is called The Palestra College Network. The name comes from the Greek word “palestra” which means: “a public place in ancient Greece for training and practice in athletics.” The website consist’s of college reporters who report news, weather, politics, sports, and community events. The Palestra covers a bunch of college and universities having reporters in all the schools. Making them probably one of the largest news media to cover local college events in the country. And it’s all Internet. They know exactly who they market to, which is college students. This will be the future of broadcast news. You will be able to get all your news online and pick and choose what stories you want to hear, when you want to hear them. It will be interactive, informative, and fun. I also believe it will be unbiased, but that maybe wishful thinking on my part.
