How much Crime is Really going on in Dist. 150?

May 21st, 2007

Recently, I have had a chance to speak with some District 150 teachers. Amazingly, they talked about how much they deal with crime issues at our schools. I was taken back by that since I never read about it in the paper, or hear about in the news. How much crime is really going on in Dist. 150?

Case in point. A few weeks back, one teacher recounts that she found a duffle bag in the parking lot of Glen Oak School. It was sitting by itself. She goes to pick it up and brings it in the school. (kind of thought that was a mistake right there, but….) A kid comes in running after her in panic, explaining the duffle bag needs to go back out in the parking lot. She askes why? He tries to forcably remove the duffle bag from her arms. As she looks in, it’s full of drugs. It was a drug drop off. She calls the police, no arrests were made, and nothing is reported in the paper. I called around the local media, nobody heard the call on the police scanner.

Last week, a knife was brought to school by a 8th grade boy in Lindbergh Middle School. The police were called. I called a local news station to see if they had any reports on the incident, they told me “nothing came through on the police scanner”. Oh really? I called the School to see if the incident was factual, indeed it was said the Principle.

I have heard story after story from teachers about crime in District 150, and yet I hardly read or hear anything in the local media. So I come to this conclusion: Either District 150 isn’t being entirely forthcoming when it comes to crime in our school district, or they have reached an “agreement” with the PPD not broadcast calls so it doesn’t get picked up on a police scanner, thus media doesn’t hear about it.

There have been other occurances that have been reported. Like the Teacher at Mannual allegedly having sex with a minorHowever, it’s the smaller ocurrances that seem to be getting by.
