Luciano misses the Point
March 29th, 2007
Yesterday’s article from Phil Luciano about the “Gutless Rants Hurt Journalism” is a little off the mark. Phil goes on to explain that he and modern journalism are heading in different directions. Well, he’s is right about that if he thinks that letting readers from the community (or anywhere for that matter) comment on the Peoria Journal Stars website hurt the credibility of the newspaper. I like Phil, but he’s wrong on this.
“Terrific. Long live free speech, eh? Tell me, of what value can this be”?
Phil writes about an example of someone (anyomous) commenting (freely) on the website and was a bit nasty. He questioned the value of the comment. My question is: who is Phil to put a value on anything anybody says? He get’s paid to express his opinion. So is he saying his paid value is higher than someone of the communities comment value?
“That’s what rankles me about Web comments: no accountability. You can drop bombs at will, but no one can retaliate”.
Who are you talking about when it comes to retaliation? Does the paper feel it needs to retaliate? I could go into a Frudian psychological breakdown as to why you would say “retaliate” for a another person’s opinion, but….of course we have lived with editorial bias for 50 years. Who got to retaliate then?
The difference is this Phil. You get paid for your opinion and we can express ours freely. Funny, it’s the same 1st Amendment Right. You have to follow policy, and we don’t. Jealous? However, as the Peoria Pundit explained, “And I have greater faith than Luciano does, apparently, in the intelligence of the Journal Star’s readers. I don’t think anyone who reads a comment seriously thinks it is therefore endorsed by the Journal Star” I totally agree with that statement.
I would say to Phil, start your own blog. There are blogs out there that are making more money per month than Phil get’s paid at the Journal Star per month. I wonder then, if he would see the value in other people’s comments. Phil, people that don’t change with times get left behind. Good luck with the new owners.
Phil is always welcome to write a responce on this blog.
