Court Backs NYC’s Ban on Dancing in Bars
February 25th, 2007
First you can’t smoke in bars, now you can’t even dance in bars/on the the bar? WTF?
The city’s 80-year-old cabaret law banning dancing by patrons in ordinary bars and restaurants is legal, the state Supreme Court’s Appellate Division ruled Thursday.
“Recreational dancing is not a form of expression protected by the federal or state constitutions,” the court wrote.
The Gotham West Coast Swing Club and several people had sued, saying the law violated their constitutional right to free expression. But the appeals court backed the law, which was enacted in the Prohibition era to crack down on speakeasies.
My Thoughts: This is un-American. What about the Bar Coyote Ugly? Are they not suppose to dance on the bar? All the taverns in New York can’t have a juke box for fear dancing might break out? It is our American right to dance in a bar, (or as I prefer to watch, on the bar) When I read this story I felt like I was watching “Footloose” all over again. Hey New York! Loose, footloose Kick off your Sunday shoes Please, Louise… (everybody sing along) Pull me offa my knees Jack, get back C’mon before we crack Lose your blues Everybody cut footloose.
Dance Kevin Bacon, dance like the wind.
