Tax Payers Come to the Rescue

December 28th, 2006

Anybody think that there is something wrong with this story?

“We’ll be able to raise (the remainder). I’m hopeful that there will be some more to come in the mail,” said Roberta Parks.

District 150’s truancy center is about $400 away from being able to reopen during the upcoming semester after a number of donors stepped forward this week.

The Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce has been leading a fundraising effort for the center, which closed its doors last week when funding ran out.

District 150 Associate Superintendent Cindy Fischer is already breathing a sigh of relief. The amount left to raise is so small that there’s no doubt in her mind that the center will open sometime next semester.

“I was particularly alarmed that we were not going to be able to provide this service. I am absolutely thrilled with the support that we received from the community,” Fischer said Wednesday.

District officials believe the center has dramatically affected truancy since its inception in September 2005. Peoria police pick up kids out during school hours and drop them off at the center, where they receive counseling and intervention services.

My Thoughts: If the District 150 would stop buying homes, stop wasting money, and put the children first instead of thier own desires to save their own ass. Maybe the District could have enough money to pony up, and save good programs like this one. Isn’t this the crux of what we should expect in our School District? Sure glad the Tax Payers came to save this….And they want to raise taxes for the District? Sounds like we are already paying enough for their mistakes.
